Exciting things are happening at the Carroll Shelby Automotive Program! It received nationwide news attention this week as Legacy EV announced that NTCC will be the first accredited college in the United States to offer an electric vehicle (EV) automotive technician certification program. The program is still in the development stage, but plans are in place to begin offering classes as soon as Summer II session this year.

Northeast Texas Community College celebrated its May 2022 commencement with two record-breaking ceremonies on Saturday, May 14. There were more than 360 candidates for graduation. The 9 a.m. ceremony honored those receiving Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Arts in Teaching degrees. About 120 students were in attendance to receive their diploma. About 160 Associate of Applied Science degrees and Certificates of Competency were awarded at the 11 a.m. ceremony.

Aaliyah Merced Avellaneda, the Dr. Jerry Wesson Scholar of Northeast Texas Community College, is one of 100 recipients of the 2022 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s prestigious Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. This highly competitive national scholarship will provide Avellaneda with up to $55,000 a year for a maximum of three years to complete her bachelor’s degree.

The NTCC EMS Program was invited to the Little Rascals Daycare and Learning Centers Community Helpers Week Celebration. Little Rascals invited many community organizations to discuss what they do and have to offer.

Biggers spread in magazine

NTCC is home to a priceless collection of artwork by renowned African American artist Dr. John Biggers. His 1954 mural “History of Negro Education in Morris County, Texas” is displayed in the college's Learning Commons in a room named for Biggers. The Learning Commons also has a collection of rare Biggers lithographs, which are currently on loan to the Tyler Museum of Art for an exhibit titled "Student/Teacher: Works of Charles Criner & Dr. John Biggers."

Northeast Texas Community College will host two spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 14 in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Seating is limited, so only guests who have tickets will be admitted into the auditorium. Both events will be streamed live on Youtube and Facebook for those who are unable to attend in person.

On 6 May, for the fourteenth time, community judges and NTCC honors students converged on the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at NTCC for an annual poster contest.  The scholarly competition was enabled again by generous grants, from Jerald and Mary Lou Mowery of Mount Vernon, and the McGraw-Hill Education Corporation—through the special work of Casey Slaght who works in the corporate office in Iowa.

For the Fall 2021 semester, Dr. Doug Richey nominated Grayson Goates (left) as Outstanding College Algebra Student. For the Spring 2022 semester, Richey nominated April O'Rand (right) as Outstanding College Algebra Student.

The NTCC Carroll Shelby Automotive Program will honor the memory of Carroll Shelby this weekend with several events. The festivities will kick off with a Dyno Day on Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shelby Automotive building on the NTCC campus. Anyone who wants to test out the performance of their vehicle is welcome. The cost is $40 for 15 minutes on the Dyno machine, first-come-first-served.
