Northeast Texas Community College recently inducted new members into Psi Beta, the national honor society in psychology for students at two-year colleges. The NTCC Continuing Education Department and Knox Shooting Academy will offer Texas License to Carry (LTC) Classes the second Saturday of each month. Upcoming dates are November 14 and December 12. Carolina Alcocer-Salas, the president of NTCC’s award-winning chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Mu Chi and the secretary of the student council of Honors Northeast, has won the 2020 Dr. Charles B. Florio Award for Leadership. Alcocer-Salas will receive $200, given by an anonymous donor, in honor of Northeast Texas Community College’s longest-term president.
Since 2008, NTCC’s honors students have presented scholarly posters at the National Collegiate Honors Council. This year the meeting went virtual. But five NTCC scholars both made the cut to present, joining 300 other undergraduate researchers from around the nation, and filed their MP4 video files, posters, and personal statements in time for the virtual conference. Over 90 percent of those exhibiting scholarly posters were university students.

Northeast Texas Community College student Carolina Alcocer-Salas, from Winfield, recently received the Walter B Cooper Scholarship at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Leadership Conference. The conference, held October 16-19 virtually this year, recognized five winners from across the entire state of Texas. The Walter B Cooper Scholarship recognizes outstanding students who are “well-rounded” in the four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.
Northeast Texas Community College rodeo team members Peyton Cooper and Tervyn Armstrong received the Jerald Smith Memorial Scholarship this past month at the Mount Pleasant rodeo. Peyton Cooper is a NTCC sophomore from Telephone, Texas. She participates in breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing. Tervyn Armstrong is an NTCC freshman from Brokenbow, Oklahoma and is a bull rider.
