Who is Phi Theta Kappa?
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is widely considered one of the nation's most prestigious academic honor societies. Founded in 1918 at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and recognized in 1929 as the official honor society for two-year colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), PTK has over 4 million members and a long-standing tradition of helping students grow as scholars and leaders.

What are the benefits of membership?
Benefits of membership are access to scholarships, no application essays required at some universities, focus on being leaders, servicing the community and fellowship with other students. Furthermore, most universities have special scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa members. Phi Theta Kappans get over $36 million annually in transfer scholarships at 600 4 year colleges and universities. $130,000 in other scholarships awarded annually by Phi Theta Kappa for associate and baccalaureate degrees studies. The chances of getting into the university of your choice goes up tremendously if you have the Phi Theta Kappa seal on your associates degree.
What are the requirements for membership?
To be eligible for membership a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of associate degree course work and generally earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college, generally a 3.00 GPA. Part-time and full-time students are eligible for enrollment. Once you have 12 credit hours of college level courses with a 3.5 GPA you will receive an invitation to join.
How much does it cost?
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a one time fee of $91. If you transfer to another institution your membership transfers with you. Members can easily update their address information with headquarters by using the On-Line Change of Address Form. Also, visit the Phi Theta Kappa enrollment form to ensure that you have submitted your graduate/transfer date, major and other information to headquarters. This will help ensure that you will be considered for scholarships and that you have access to exclusive membership benefits.
How much time does it take?
This is a matter of individual choice. Some members devote many hours to Phi Theta Kappa service activities;others may elect to not participate at all. Phi Theta Kappa's constitution requires only that you maintain a certain GPA. The chapter cannot withhold any benefits (i.e., wearing honors stole; receiving scholarship recommendations) and may not require service activities of new or old members.
