The Northeast Texas Community College Men's Eagles Soccer team suffered a 6-1 defeat against San Jacinto College-South on Friday, ending their season for the year. The Region 14 semifinal game was the closest that the Eagles have ever gotten to a national championship since their program began in 2010.
The Eagles and San Jacinto both defended their goals until the 35-minute mark when Eagles Forward Rimario Gordon scored a goal, assisted by Logan Humphries. San Jacinto scored their first goal and then pulled ahead just before the end of the first half and went on to win the game.
The loss means that the Eagles' soccer season is finished, but Head Coach Donavan Dowling says that they are not going to waste any time preparing for next year.
"We are going to move right into recruiting and training for next season," said Dowling.
NTCC has been buzzing with excitement over the success of the soccer team this season.
"We are excited to see the team doing so well," said Director of Student Activities Rico Willis at a well-attended send off event held at the college on Thursday,† "We are proud of all of the hard work that the team and coaching staff have put in this year." Willis said.
The Eagles finish their season with a record 14 wins and seven losses. Gabriel Cavalcante and Rimario Gordon, both first year players, led the team this season with a tied record of 11 goals and eight assists each. Dowling has high expectations for the team next year.
"We are going to build on what we have. We are not going to lose a lot of players this year, so we will keep our core, and we are going to work on building that core and train hard so that we can beat those teams next year." Dowling said.
