Nine members of Alpha Mu Chi, Northeast Texas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, attended the Texas Leadership Conference held at Grayson College on October 11-13. Attendees included Courtney Baldwin, Tonya Hammonds, Jacqueline Fouche’, Katelyn Kimbrough, Mercedes Collins, Halley Goodwin, Tranequea Hammons, and Brent Garrett. Jacob Lambie, as the District III Vice-President, helped plan and lead the event which had as its theme “A Changing World: Crafting Global Leaders.”
More than 350 people from throughout the Texas Region of Phi Theta Kappa attended the event. The conference included listening to world-class speakers and then breaking into small groups to discuss the ideas heard. The seminar groups give attendees to meet members from throughout the Texas Region and cultivate new friends and regional connections.
Speakers at the event included Joanne Bland, a Civil Rights leader who as a child marched in the Selma March, and Kantis Simmons whose career includes developing new products for Mobil Chemical Company, creating new contact lens products for CIBA Vision, and improving aircrafts, space shuttles and military jets for NASA Langley Research Center.
A Quidditch match and a Harry Potter-themed dance ensured that attendees had a “magical time” as well.
Katelyn Kimbrough and Halley Goodwin were recognized as Five Star Members. Tonya Hammonds received the top Walter B. Cooper scholarship.
