Dr. Clint Davis and Dr. Lesa Presley will speak at the event.
By: Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director
The annual Northeast Texas Poetry Reading on Friday, September 3 at 11 AM will again occur at the Foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on the Northeast Texas Community College campus. The public is invited for this free event, the fourteenth of its kind in as many years. This year, in addition to six readings of the highest ranked poems of the adult and student divisions, and a presentation of winning Northeast Texas images, two speakers will share their perceptions of our region. Rev. Dr. Clint Davis and NTCC Professor Lesa Presley both have lived elsewhere for significant periods, but also have established a strong sense of home in Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Dr. Clint Davis is from West Monroe, Louisiana, but he has served as the Pastor of First Baptist in Mount Pleasant since 1992. A popular speaker and baccalaureate service leader, the Reverend Davis has become a most recognized emblem of local culture. Presley is a native of Mount Pleasant. She received her Ph.D. at Texas Tech University. She has performed research on Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and the role of complex proteins in mammalian systems. She enjoys noting regional differences in nature, and has visited a great number of national and state parks.
The deadline for the poetry and image submissions is noon, Friday, 27 August. Send questions, poems and images to the NTCC Honors Director, Dr. Andrew P. Yox at ayox@ntcc.edu. Poems should address something of the character, culture or history of Northeast Texas. Images should try to capture something definitive or interesting about the area.
