The Texas Region of Phi Theta Kappa held its annual Texas Honors Institute as a virtual event July 23 – 25. The event featured an art inspired theme and included three days of guest speakers, interactive virtual fellowship events, seminar group discussions, and bonding activities. Traditionally the event is planned and coordinated by the Texas Regional leadership team, which this year includes District III Vice-President, Cade Bennett of NTCC.
“Being able to help plan and run THI was truly amazing. It was a very gratifying experience getting to see how the several topics from the speakers touched and impacted our attendees and ending each night with a fun fellowship event.” Said Bennett. “I certainly can’t wait to be back with all these amazing people at our next conference.”
Alpha Mu Chi, NTCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, had five registered representatives at the conference. Including Bennett, other attendees were Chapter President, Brian Ramirez, and chapter Vice-Presidents, Israel Perez, John Rodriguez, and Davin Whatley.
Guest speakers included Dr. Thomas Patterson who kicked off the first General Session with enlightening data about Political Polarization. Odell Bizzell gave great tips to navigate conversations about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He reminded students that as leaders, they have the unique opportunity to change the entire world. Dr. Kellie Matherly spread a message on how to be resilient through cultural trauma. Dr. Anne Ginnett took attendees through the history of disabilities and civil rights.
After listening to these thought-provoking general session speakers, attendees divided into smaller seminar groups to discuss the ideas presented, allowing members from across the state to get to know one another better and share ideas. Additional fellowship opportunities allowed attendees to play games and bond.
Towards the end of the conference, the Dr. Mary Hood Texas STAR Scholarships were announced. Alpha Mu Chi members, Aaliyah Avellaneda and Maxime Risner, won two of the thirteen scholarships awarded.
