Alpha Mu Chi, the Northeast Texas Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), recently learned that another student has received a state-wide scholarship award.†Tanika Santos-MacSwain, of The Woodlands,†received the Walter B. Cooper Scholarship at the PTK Texas Leadership Conference. She was one of only three recipients from across the state of Texas.
The Walter B. Cooper scholarship is for individuals who are "well-rounded" members, representing all four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Santos-MacSwain is the third Alpha Mu Chi member to win the award in as many years. Mary Smith won in 2015 and Kayleah Cumpian in 2014.
"Tanika really fits the bill when it comes to the well-rounded student. She is active on campus in both athletics and academics, excelling at both. This takes a lot of focus and determination," Dr. Melissa Fulgham, Alpha Mu Chi Advisor, said.
Santos-MacSwain serves as co-captain of the NTCC Eagles nationally-ranked women's soccer team and as a Supplemental Instruction tutor for Anatomy & Physiology. She was a recipient last spring of one of the inaugural Bonnie Spencer prizes in history for writing an outstanding essay for her history class. Currently an active member of Phi Theta Kappa as well as Student Government Association, she served as Student Government Association (SGA) president last year. Her Service work has involved serving the homeless at a shelter, work for the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), Titus County Cares, Salvation Army, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
