The Northeast Texas Community College Learning Resource Center (LRC) and Culinary Arts School will host their second annual Edible Book Contest on Tuesday, April 1. This event challenges participants to depict a favorite book through edible art. The contest is open to the general public and all experience levels are welcome.
Contest entry forms are available online at www.ntcc.edu/ediblebooks. These should be returned to the LRC by Monday, March 31. While there is no cost to enter, late entries (day of) will be charged a fee of $2. Entries should be presented for judging at the LRC (center of main NTCC campus) between 10:00-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1. Edible books will be on display and winners will be announced at 1 p.m. Winners do not have to be present at the ceremony to win.
"Last year was a lot of fun, and hope that this year will be even better," Heather Shaw, NTCC Reference Librarian, said. "It is a chance for people to really be creative and have fun. We were pleasantly surprised with last year's entries and can't wait to see what people come up with for 2014.
Edible books should utilize at least 95% edible materials and should not exceed 18x24 inches in size. Edible books are often presented as cakes, but are not limited to that format. Judges will look for originality and creativity, skill and construction, visual appeal and tie-in with the literary work being depicted. A full list of rules can be viewed at www.ntcc.edu/ediblebooks.
"This is our first year to open this contest to the public and we really hope see a lot of entries from the community. We know there are phenomenally talented culinary artists out there and this is a great place to showcase your skills," Chef Bren Young, NTCC Culinary Arts instructor, said.
Numerous prizes will be awarded, which include movie theatre passes, gift certificates to local restaurants, NTCC dental hygiene services and more. To learn more about the contest, please contact Shaw at 903-434-8152 or Chef Kat Kilpatrick at 903-434-8392.
